Xiaomi 17 Ultra isn’t subtle about what it wants to be. A camera phone first, a flagship second, and it wears that ambition openly through a Leica-branded Summilux lens system that’s built around a massive 1-inch main sensor.
At the center is Xiaomi’s new 50MP “Light and Shadow Master” camera, powered by the Light Hunter 1050L sensor. It pairs a wide ƒ/1.67 aperture with a 23mm equivalent focal length, letting in an impressive amount of light while keeping perspective natural. Xiaomi leans on 4-in-1 pixel binning to push effective pixel size to 3.2μm, backed by optical image stabilization, fast QPD autofocus, and a high-transmittance 1G+6P aspherical lens stack. On paper — and likely in practice, kind of setup designed for night shots that don’t immediately fall apart.
Zoom duties are handled by a standout 200-megapixel telephoto camera with a 1/1.4-inch sensor, which is unusually large for this category. ƒ/2.39–2.96 variable aperture covers a 3.2x to 4.3x optical zoom range, with OIS keeping things steady. Xiaomi also pushes versatility here, adding a 30cm telephoto macro mode that lets you get surprisingly close without switching lenses.
Rounding out the trio is a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera with a 14mm equivalent focal length and a 115-degree field of view. It supports autofocus and a 5cm super macro mode, making it more than just a “group photo” lens.
On the software side, Xiaomi layers in its usual computational tricks: 200MP ultra-high-resolution capture, dynamic photos, cinematic live camera movement, and smart composition suggestions. There’s even an automatic Super Moon mode, because of course there is. Leica’s native dual image styles remain, giving photos either a more punchy modern look or a restrained, classic tone — a small but meaningful nod to the brand partnership.
Xiaomi 17 Ultra feels less like a phone with a good camera and more like a compact camera that happens to make calls.
